Young Environmental activist Padayatra of 7000 km
Ayan Banerjee (24 years old Environmental activist, Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh) is currently undertaking a 7,000 km walk across India on-feet to spread awareness about sustainable living, resource use, and compassion towards the environment and animals. So far, he has covered 3 states(Sundarban forest West bengal, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh) walking over 2,800 km. Along the route, he conducts sessions at schools, NGOs, Blind Schools, and Women Social Welfare Foundations, distributing organic vegetable seeds and distributed over 2,500 seeds by now.
In 2 days in Chennai, he distributed nearly 200 seeds and spoke with almost 300 students across 4 NGOs and 2 schools. He visited the ALT School, Adyar and The Suyam Trust, Vyasarpadi, an anti-corruption and social welfare organisation. The trust’s work centres on identifying children living on the streets as beggars and giving them access to proper education and a stable life, and some of those children have gone on to become advocates. He spoke with at least 50 children there about protecting the planet and practical steps toward sustainability, distributing 30 seeds before continuing on.
Between The ALT School and Suyam Trust, Ayan distributed 90 seeds on June 19. The next day, Ayan met a Maharishi Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School (CBSE), Choolai, Std.6 students during a 40-minute session. Despite the short window, questions kept coming, and Ayan personally distributed more than 100 seeds in under an hour. The next day Ayan joined the Heritage Walk, a three hour exploration of Mount Road with Madras Inherited. The walk traced the city’s history through the Curzons furniture shop, old government buildings, South India’s first electric theatre, and the story of the Cosmopolitan Club, which was founded so Indians could play tennis and golf when British era clubs denied them entry.
