Saveetha College of Nursing organised Breast Cancer Screening camp

Under the SCON–UBA (Unnat Bharat Abhiyan) initiative, the Department of Community Health Nursing, Saveetha College of Nursing (Thandalam), successfully organized a Breast Cancer Screening Camp on April 9 at Chembarambakkam village, in observance of World Health Day. The primary objective of the program was to create awareness among women regarding the importance of early detection, prevention, and timely management of breast cancer.
The program commenced with an introductory session by Dr. G. Bhuvaneswari, Professor, Saveetha College of Nursing, who elaborated on the World Health Day theme and highlighted its significance in promoting preventive healthcare practices within the community. She emphasized the need for regular screening and community-based awareness to reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with breast cancer. Dr. R. Vijayalakshmi, Principal, Saveetha College of Nursing, delivered the special address, stressing the crucial role of early screening and prompt intervention in minimizing the burden of breast cancer. She encouraged women to actively participate in screening programs and adopt healthy lifestyle practices.
A total of 38 women from the community were screened during the camp. Among them, 4 women were identified with abnormal findings and were referred to higher healthcare centers for further diagnostic evaluation and management. The screening process included clinical breast examination and health education on self-breast examination techniques. The camp witnessed the active participation of 15 students, including B.Sc. Nursing intern’s students who played a vital role in organizing the event, assisting healthcare professionals during screening, and educating beneficiaries about breast cancer awareness and preventive measures.
The program was efficiently coordinated with the support of faculty members, including Dr. S. Tamilselvi, Professor, M. Kavitha Assist. Professor, D. Anitha, and S. Suganthi, Nursing Tutor, whose contributions ensured the smooth execution of the camp. The institution expresses its sincere gratitude to the Principal for her constant guidance and encouragement. Special appreciation is extended to NGO India Turn Pink for their collaboration and support, which significantly contributed to the success of the program.
