Eye surgery held for preterm baby
A preterm baby from Nellore, Andhra Pradesh, born to underprivileged parents who eke out a living as fruitsellers, developed a severe form of Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP), a blinding disease affecting preterm babies. As Laser and Intraocular injections did not suffice, it underwent suture-less, advanced, keyhole, lens sparing vitrectomy surgery in both the eyes under general anaesthesia at Radhatri Nethralaya.
The baby’s vision has been completely restored due to the timely surgery.
Dr. Vasumathy Vedantham, Vitreoretinal surgeon and Pediatric retina specialist of Radhatri Nethralaya who operated on the baby said, the baby was picked up on screening by Project Vision on Wheels, the rural teleophthalmology project of Radhatri Nethralaya, under the aegis of Gurupriya Vision Research Foundation, the public charitable trust of Radhatri Nethralaya, which has screened more than 1,50,000 babies all over rural Tamilnadu and Andhra Pradesh for ROP.
The surgeries in both the eyes was done free of cost by the support of HCL
