Maha Shivratri is an annual Festival Ritual Awareness dedicated to the Bhagavan Shiva and celebrated mainly at midnight. This year the Maha Shivratri will be celebrated on Feb.26, Wednesday. Siva Purana, Skanda Purana, Linga Purana and Padma Purana narrate about how on this day, Shiva drank poison (negativity) to protect the universe.
However, the poison was so deadly that it made even the mighty lord Shiva terribly ill. Immediately Devi Parvati, the divine mother, used her magical healing energy to cool down his burning throat. So, Neelakanda’s blue throat became a symbol of love and sacrifice for the world.
Later, gods performed the wedding of Shiva and Parvati (Sakti) again to celebrate the comeback of Shiva at midnight. This is the night when Siva and Sakti unite as ArdhaNareeswara and perform the heavenly dance of creation, preservation and destruction. This festival’s main significance is overcoming darkness, negativity and ignorance in life.
Staying awake throughout the night, fasting, doing Yogam, pooja and dhyan can do wonders in our life.
