History and Significance of Maha Shivratri

The legend of Shivlinga is deeply associated with Maha Shivratri. It is believed that it was on the day of Maha Shivaratri that Lord Shiva first manifested himself in the form of a Linga. Since then, this day is considered very sacred.
This year the Maha Shivaratri will be celebrated on the Feb.26, Wednesday.
On the evening of Shivaratri, many temples conduct the ‘Shivapuranam’ discourse. It is a privilege for us to listen to it.
Lord Shiva is worshipped with milk, ghee, holy water and Tirumanjanam on this day.
On the occasion of Maha Shivratri, one should rise early in the morning, take a bath, and conduct the morning pujas at sunrise. Following this, a visit to the Shiva temple for a proper darshan is recommended. Upon returning home, it is essential to observe a fast during the day and throughout the night.
During the ‘Lingorpava’ period, between 11.30 pm and 1 pm, the worship of Shiva can be completed by meditating quietly or by chanting Shiva mantras.
Worshiping Lord Shiva on this auspicious day makes it possible to overcome any obstacles.
