Thuvakkam Revitalizes Water Body in Ramanathapuram, Empowering Local Community

Thuvakkam (Valasaravakkam), a non-governmental organization committed to environmental sustainability, education, and humanitarian efforts, announces the successful rejuvenation of the Kalporuki Kanmai, a 31.5-acre water body in Orivayal Panchayat, Kadaladi Block, Ramanathapuram district. This achievement falls under Thuvakkam’s Project Blue Zone, which addresses water scarcity in the region.

The inaugural event held on Feb.5 was graced by R.S. Rajakannappan, Honourable Minister for Milk & Dairy Development, Tamil Nadu, and Simranjeet Singh Kahlon, IAS, District Collector, Ramanathapuram. Key members of Thuvakkam, including Founder/President Krishnakumar Suresh and Executive Director Syed Sirajudeen, welcomed the dignitaries and presented an overview of the project.

The initiative involved the removal of 14 acres of Prosopis juliflora, desilting over 65,000 cubic meters of sediment, and the renovation of a 3 km inlet water channel. This has created a potential water holding capacity of 1,820,000 liters, benefiting over 650 acres of agricultural land and 500 families.

R.S. Rajakannappan (Honourable Minister for Milk & Dairy Development, Tamil Nadu) and District Collector Simranjeet Singh Kahlon inaugurated the project board and participated in a sapling planting ceremony- as a part of Thuvakkam’s Treecember campaign- to plant 500,000 saplings across India as a commitment to environmental conservation. Agro-horticulture saplings were distributed to local farmers, who will be responsible for their maintenance. Students from Nammazhvar College and over 250 villagers actively participated in the event, planting over 260 saplings.

“This project exemplifies Thuvakkam’s dedication to creating sustainable solutions for water management and community empowerment,” said Krishnakumar Suresh. “We are grateful for the support of the government, our partners, and the local community in making this vision a reality.”

Thuvakkam plans to plant and maintain a total of 6,500 Tree saplings through community efforts, further enhancing the environmental impact of the project. This initiative promises to significantly improve agricultural productivity and the livelihoods of local communities in the region.
