Radhatri Nethralaya launches free Diabetic Retinopathy screening

The 12th annual Project RADAR (Radhatri Nethralaya Diabetic Retinopathy Project in Association with Rotary) which is a month long Free Diabetic Retinopathy screening for the public was launched at Radhatri Nethralaya on the occasion of World Diabetes day (Nov.14).
It was inaugurated by Prof Dr. Mani, Dean Omandurar Medical College and Rtn. KV Sundaram, CEO Universal FABCO under the aegis of Rotary club of Chennai Towers. The dignitaries released pamphlets to promote awareness on Diabetic Retinopathy to be distributed amongst the public and gave away certificates to 30 medical students and school students who were present certifying them as Yuva Nethra Jyotis, Youth Vision Amabssadors who would promote awareness about diabetic retinopathy in the community.
Dr. Vasumathy Vedantham, Medical Director Radhatri Nethralaya gave a presentation on Diabetic Retinopathy and demonstrated how vision could be impaired in diabetic retinopathy by means of customised glasses. Dr. Praveen Krishna, Medical Director Radhatri Nethralaya said that for every five years of diabetes, the incidence of diabetic retinopathy is doubled and hence diabetic patients should get their eyes examined atleast once a year.
Dr. Vasumathy demonstrated the use of a new artificial intelligence (AI) based retinal camera to detect diabetic retinopathy in less than a minute without dilatation and said that this camera would be employed for detection of diabetic retinopathy in public places, parks, urban slums etc. over the next one month.
