Alpha Celebrates Onam
Alpha Arts and Science College celebrated the Onam festival on Sept. 13 in its premises. The event showcased Kerala’s rich cultural traditions, bringing together the entire college community for a day of festivities. The celebration began with a warm welcome address delivered by Esther Johanah of II BCom General, setting a positive and energetic tone for the day’s events.
Dr. A. Sivashankar, Principal of Alpha Arts and Science College, addressed the students, motivating them and emphasizing the importance of cultural celebrations in academic institutions. This was followed by a series of vibrant competitions like the exciting Vadamvali (Tug of War) competition, where teams from various departments competed with strength and coordination. The Atthapookalam (Flower Rangoli) competition, where participants displayed their creativity through beautiful floral designs. Dr. Kavitha Prabhakaran, Associate Professor & Head, Department of English, presented the relevance of Onam, sharing the mythological story of Maha Bali and Vamana and its importance in Kerala’s cultural heritage.
A rhythmic and powerful performance of Chenda Melam followed, creating a festive atmosphere on campus. Next, a stunning Group Dance in Kerala style captivated the audience, showcasing the traditional dance forms of the region. The event continued with soulful group and solo songs by students, celebrating the essence of unity and joy. The students also enjoyed several impromptuperformances in the song and dance categories. The day concluded with the prize distribution ceremony, where the Principal honored the winners of the Pookalam and Vadamvali competitions, recognizing their efforts and talents.
