Thuvakkam conducts awareness programme on International Plastic Bag Free Day
Thuvakkam (NGO), Valasaravakkam has conducted a special event dedicated to raising awareness among students on International Plastic Bag Free Day on July 3, this initiative underscores Thuvakkam’s commitment to promoting environmental sustainability and reducing plastic pollution in communities.
The event was held at the Government Higher Secondary School, Karambakkam, where 63 students from Std.6 participated in making paper bags from old newspapers. 8 Volunteers from Virtusa and the Thuvakkam team presided the event and oriented the students about the ill effects of using plastics and the destruction which is caused to the environment.
This event aims to educate students and raise their awareness about the environmental impact of plastic bags and encourage sustainable alternatives. Cloth bags significantly reduce carbon footprints by minimizing plastic waste, promoting reusable alternatives, conserving resources, and enhancing durability, compared to single-use plastic bags. It will include interactive sessions with volunteers on reducing plastic usage and adopting eco-friendly practices.
“We are excited to host this event as part of our ongoing efforts to raise awareness about the harmful effects of plastic pollution,” said Krishna Kumar, Founder-President at Thuvakkam NGO.
By engaging students, we hope to inspire meaningful change towards a cleaner, greener future.
