Cyclone Michaung Unleashes Chaos in Chennai

Cyclone Michaung, living up to its name denoting strength and resilience, has left Chennai reeling in its aftermath. The southern state of Tamil Nadu is grappling with heavy rainfall, waterlogged streets and transportation disruptions. In response, the state government has declared a public holiday for schools and colleges in Chennai, underscoring the severity of the situation.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced a significant relief fund for cyclone-affected states, with a focus on Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. The release of Rs. 450 crore from the State Disaster Relief Fund (SDRF) and approval of a Rs. 561 crore flood mitigation project for Chennai demonstrate the government’s commitment to swift action. An additional Rs. 493 crore was allocated to the Andhra Pradesh disaster relief fund. Union Minister Rajnath Singh conducted an aerial survey of the flood-affected areas in Tamil Nadu, engaging in discussions with Chief Minister M.K. Stalin to assess the damage caused by Cyclone Michaung. Residents in parts of Chennai and its suburbs are contending with stagnant water, power disruptions and transportation challenges. The Madras Crocodile Bank Trust and Centre for Herpetology, located near Chennai, are also impacted.
Transport services have taken a severe hit, with numerous cancellations of trains and flights. In its latest update, the weather office predicts heavy to very heavy rainfall and strong winds in four districts until late Monday. The government’s proactive measures include the declaration of a public holiday and urging private firms to allow employees to work from home in affected regions on December 5.
