The festive season of Diwali, often referred to as the Festival of Lights, is a time of joy and celebration for people across India. However, amidst the dazzling fireworks and sparkling lights, there lies a hidden concern, the impact of firecrackers on the environment and public safety. In response to these concerns, the government has taken several measures to ensure a safe and eco-friendly Diwali, striking a balance between traditions and environmental responsibility.
The Chennai police have issued a timely advisory, emphasizing the use of green firecrackers during Diwali. These are fireworks made with chemicals that are environmentally friendly, reducing the harmful effects on the air and surroundings. This move aligns with the Supreme Court’s guidelines, which aim to reduce the environmental impact of firecrackers. Additionally, the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board has designated specific time windows for bursting firecrackers, restricting it to 6-7 am and 7-8 pm on October 24. These measures not only ensure a controlled and regulated celebration but also help in reducing noise pollution during the festival.
Safety should be a paramount concern during Diwali, especially when dealing with firecrackers. The police advisory also stipulates essential safety measures. Firecrackers producing more than 125 decibels of sound have been prohibited and the use of Chinese-made crackers has been banned. Moreover, rocket crackers near huts or multi-story flats are strictly forbidden, minimizing the risk of accidents. In addition, individuals are advised not to store firecrackers near candles, oil lamps, or other open flames. Drying wet crackers near stoves or ovens in kitchens can lead to accidents and should be avoided. In case of fire accidents or any emergencies related to firecrackers, the public can reach out to the authorities using the helpline numbers 112 for police and the fire and rescue department and 108 for medical emergencies.
Firecrackers have wide-ranging effects on our environment and society. They contribute to air pollution by releasing harmful pollutants, impacting air quality and posing risks to public health. The deafening noise generated by firecrackers leads to noise pollution, causing stress, sleep disturbances, and anxiety in communities. Furthermore, the chemicals and heavy metals in firecrackers can contaminate the environment, affecting soil and water sources. The improper use of firecrackers also results in health hazards, such as burn and eye injuries. Wildlife, particularly birds and animals, are adversely affected by the loud noises, leading to distress and disorientation. Additionally, the economic impact of a firecracker ban can be detrimental to those dependent on the industry for their livelihoods.
Diwali celebrations generate significant waste, with firecracker debris contributing to the environmental burden. Responsible celebration with eco-friendly options and adherence to safety guidelines is crucial to mitigate these adverse effects.
