On the 2^nd of October, a deep sense of reverence and remembrance fills the hearts of every Indian. It is a day of national unity, marking the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, the leader who guided India towards independence through unwavering dedication to truth, non-violence and simplicity.

Commemorative activities on Gandhi Jayanti are both solemn and inspirational. They include prayer meetings, where people reflect on his life and principles. Devotional music, like his favourite, Raghupati Raghava Raja Ram, bringing hearts together and giving them a sense of direction. One of the day’s highlights is the awarding of prizes to people and groups who have significantly impacted society in the spirit of Gandhian ideals. To preach Gandhiji’s message of nonviolence and social transformation, rallies and marches are organised. Participants display banners displaying Mahatma’s words. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was assassinated on January 30, 1948, by Nathuram Godse, a Hindu nationalist in the garden of the former Birla House. He was a skilled lawyer and practiced law in South Africa before returning to India to lead the freedom movement.

Gandhi Jayanti is more than just a National holiday, it is a day to reflect on the values that Mahatma Gandhi stood for. It serves as a reminder that one person’s dedication to truth, non-violence, and simplicity can bring about monumental change.
