Thuvakkam (NGO, Valasaravakkam) and HCL Foundation was awarded the prestigious MCCI-TAFE CSR Awards 2022 by the esteemed The Madras Chamber of Commerce & Industry on the Jan. 31 2023. Commemorating the collaborative greenery initiative, a celebration was conducted at the Chennaiyil Vanam urban forest, Kasturba Nagar MRTS on Feb. 18. The weekend event was graced by collaborators and well-wishers, HCL Foundation and Thuvakkam teams.
The greenery initiative was awarded in recognition of the innovation, collaboration and social impact created in the Field of Environmental Sustainability & Ecological Balance through the Greenery – Urban Forest project. The forest stretching to about a kilometer, about 0.7 Acres and housing 7000+ indigenous plants is benefitting the biodiversity, enriching the soil, air and water conditions and bettering the community living around. It also acts as a community engagement spot, attracting the public to connect with nature.
The celebration focused on the synergy involved in the creation of the urban forest. Beginning with the introduction of Thuvakkam, the event proceeded with the walk into woods. The event began with the introduction of Thuvakkam, followed by the briefing of the MCCI CSR Award 2022. Post which various environmental engagement activities were conducted.
Various events from College students, Corporate employees and Volunteers joined the events and participated enthusiastically. Walk into the wood was a time of engagement for volunteers. Followed by which, the Eco-info game was a time of learning on various environmental aspects.
The volunteers gathered had a time of learning and understanding about our native species and the significant role each of us play in protecting the environment. The event ended with a strong reminder of each individual and entity’s role in synergizing with the right collaborators, for creating sustainable impact.
Since the plantation in August 2022 the forest has been a busy community engagement spot . The Greater Chennai Corporation has laid a bicycle path along the forest, which has proven to be a great attraction for the general public. It has welcomed morning joggers, walkers, and people who wish to unwind and relax with nature. Through various maintenance activities and awareness sessions, many students and corporate have been involved. The ultimate aim of environmental protection and restoration is strengthened through such events.
