Onam Celebration of Alpha Arts and Science College

Alpha Arts and Science College, Porur celebrated Onam festival on Aug.24 in its premises. The Onam celebration was organised by the college’s cultural committee, left an unforgettable mark in the mind of the students and faculty alike. The bedecked campus was festive with floral pookalams and traditional decorations that transported everyone into a festive spirit. The highlight of the celebration was the grand procession led by students adorned in traditional Kerala attire to welcome King Mahabali back to his kingdom. Dressed in exquisite Kerala kasavu sarees and mundu, they displayed the beauty of Kerala’s heritage.
The Principal, Dr. A. Sivashankar addressed the gathering with the festive spirit and fervour narrating the importance of harvest festivals like Onam. Later, students actively participated in various cultural activities, including the famous vadam Vali or Tug of War and Athapookalam or flower rangoli contest.
The Atha Pookkalam competition allowed students to display their artistic creativity. The culturals included two group dances which showcased the Thiruvathirakali dance forms which were performed in tune with popular Onam songs. The group songs by students and faculty members with foot tapping numbers from trending Onam playlists, made the performances a roaring success. The formal celebration ended with a vote of thanks by the Student Cultural coordinator. Adding to the colours there were traditional onam games for both boys and girls tug of war.
